My day off spot: Compote

It’s not a weekend unless I’ve had a chance to stop by Compote on SE Clinton— a bakery and cafe with tasty food made fresh from local, high quality ingredients. Plus, it’s one of the few places with a menu that appeals to vegetarians, paleo-folk, gluten avoiders, and omnivores alike.

On a nice day, you’ll find me on their spacious, sun-dappled back patio sipping an iced coconut milk latte. The coffee is Portland’s own Ristretto Roasters and they do it right. When it’s rainy and chilly, I sit in their the bright and airy, yet cozy, bakery with my hands wrapped around a “Portland Fog” earl grey tea latte.

My go-to is the poached egg stack with sautéed greens and either their delicious house-made chicken sausage patty (paleo option!) or crispy hash browns. It comes with a bright and super fresh little salad on the side– an unexpected, but really welcome addition to my brunch plate.

They also live up to their name with two or more scratch-made, seasonal compotes daily– like strawberry rhubarb, summer berry and spiced apricot plum. Choose your favorite and pick something from the bakery case to spread it on (scones, a dense chocolate loaf cake, or a gluten-free banana nut muffin). It’s also great on their biscuits, pancakes and granola and yogurt bowl.
